Bourbon vs. Whiskey
Sometimes the world doesn’t flow quite as easily as bourbon…
Bummer, we know, but since we are on the topic—
What makes a bourbon a bourbon, anyway?
Are all bourbons whiskey?
(Get ready to put your thinking caps on.)
Whiskey is a rectangle.
Bourbon is a square.
All squares are rectangles, but not all rectangles are squares.
All bourbons are whiskey, but not all whiskeys are bourbons.
For bourbon to be bourbon…
1. The mash must be at least 51% corn. The rest is malted barley, rye, or wheat.
2. It must be distilled out at less than 160 proof.
3. It must go into the barrels at less than 125 proof.
4. Only new, charred, oak barrels may be used.
5. There are no additives.
So, it’s a type of whiskey, much the way that champagne is a type of wine.
Above all else, guess what pairs best with bourbon?
