Focus on...Longevity Wines, a Black-owned winery

Longevity Wines is a family-owned, urban winery and certified minority-owned business based in the Livermore Valley wine region of Northern California. Founders Debra and Phil Long opened Longevity in 2008 when their winemaking hobby outgrew their garage. By that time, they had spent years visiting tasting rooms and saw a need for inclusive wine experiences.

Winemaker Phil Long is the president of the Association of African American Vintners (AAAV) and the founder of Longevity Wines, a brand based on his love affair with his wife, Debra. They were an interracial couple focused on offering inclusive wine experiences until Debra lost her battle with pancreatic cancer in 2019. Phil personally designed the delicate heart logo on their bottles, then had it tattooed on his forearm before she died so that she will always be with him.

From an Ebony article, titled, “Hidden Black History: Black Winemakers and Wines You Need to Know…” (read it in its entirety here): He is devoted to elevating awareness of African Americans in the wine industry and paving paths to wine careers for all minorities. When it comes to the current state of inclusivity in the wine industry, Long believes that there is a lot of work to do, but change does seem to be happening today at a greater pace than ever before.

Black owned wineries currently make up just a tenth of one percent of the entire industry. Long’s take on the statistic is that African-Americans don't come from a culture of winemaking. But he hopes that creating opportunities for young winemakers of color will become the ground floor of a changing culture.

Here at Acme, we’re grateful to be able to share Longevity’s Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon with you. Wile says, “Come grab a bottle today! You won’t be disappointed.”

Going Up!

“U.S. Inflation Hit 7% in December, Fastest Pace Since 1982”

“US consumer prices rise at fastest rate in nearly 40 years”

You’ve seen it on the news, you’ve seen it in the grocery store, you’ve definitely seen it in your wallet. Even the Dollar Tree is feeling the pinch of rising costs:

“'Sick to my stomach': Dollar Tree fanatics protest new $1.25 prices”

(Can they even call it the Dollar Tree anymore? Not much fun to say “The Dollar and a Quarter Tree…but we digress…)

And, here at Acme, we’re not untouched. All of our distributors have been experiencing price increases from their wine, liquor, and beer vendors. Those price increases are passed onto us. We are doing our best to keep prices fair, but inflation is still happening.

We do our best to place large enough orders to get quantity discounts that we can then pass along to our customers. We just wanted you all to know that we are NOT trying to gouge you! Some ways to keep your liquor costs lower:

  • Join our Acme Frequent Buyer program! For every dollar you spend, save 1.5% in your account for points to cash out at any time. Double points during the off seasons!

  • Buy in “bulk”— a handle of spirits is less per drink than a fifth. Same with boxes of wine- more bang for your buck!

  • Case deals! Mix wine and liquor: 12 bottles = 10% off liquor and 15% off wine.

  • Deals and specials all the time- follow us on the social media channels for updates! Such as our new all-the-time offer: Mix and match a 4 pack of 16oz beers for a discount!

We hope you’ll visit soon to check out our extensive selection and chat with our knowledgeable staff!

Cocktail Corner featuring Wintery Gin Drinks!

Yeah, you read that right. While so many brown spirits are taking center stage on these long, cold eves, we want to remind everyone about the joys of junipery gin this winter. While OF COURSE you are allowed to drink icy gin and tonics all year long, here are a few other ideas for a most favorite of clear spirits.

Warm Gin & Tonic

Ingredients:

gin-acme-liquor-crested-butte-peach-street-distillers

PC: Peach Street Distillers Facebook

1.5 oz gin (Try Peach Street Distillers Jackelope Gin!)

1 oz tonic syrup

.5 oz sugar syrup

Directions:

  1. Pour gin, tonic syrup, and sugar syrup into a glass of your choice. Use a bar spoon to combine these ingredients.

  2. Pour hot water over the top, tasting occasionally to see whether or not the ratio is right for you.

  3. If you would like, you can then garnish this hot take on a gin and tonic with a lemon twist or an orange wheel.

OR, try splashing a wee bit of gin in your hot toddy or hot chocolate. We promise, it’s good!

Here’s a fun one called the Golden Purl…(why does that make us think of Greek gods or Pirates of the Caribbean?? Anyway…)

Ingredients

  • 1 cup cider

  • 1 tablespoon maple syrup

  • 1.5 oz gin

  • 2 dashes orange bitters

  • Garnish: orange peel

Directions

  1. Heat up the cider on the stove until hot, then stir in the maple syrup until it dissolves.

  2. Pour into a mug, add the gin, and stir.

  3. Top with the bitters.

  4. Garnish with an orange peel.

  5. Mmmm, sip slowly (it might be hot!) and let it warm your insides.

More info about Peach Street Distillers’ ginny gin gin:

“Hand-picked juniper berries from the high desert of Colorado’s western slope are infused in our Armangac Gin still to create the heart of our Gin series.

This is a grain based spirit of barley, wheat, and corn. After making vodka we pull some aside to make batches of gin.
After macerating the botanicals…
-lemon and lime zest
-coriander
-Angelica
-orris root
-cinnamon
-licorice root
-bunch of juniper berries
…we distill the botanicals in the still with the vodka.
Notes of lemon and lime are up front and easy to find.
Finishing in juniper makes it obviously gin.
The middle is filled with cinnamon and coriander for a bright spice that’s easy to drink on ice or in your favorite cocktail!”

We hope you’ll try some of these, and let us know in the comments what you thought!

Sober October

A not-so-new trend is growing in popularity— Sober October is here to stay. Gaining popularity across the globe, Sober October is an opportunity to stop drinking for a month (or longer). There are a lot of ways to participate and to encourage friends and family who choose to participate. Read on to see if Sober October is for you!

How does a month off booze help you?

unsplash-image-tXiMrX3Gc-g.jpg
  • It’s good for your overall health

  • Can improve sleep patterns and sleep quality

  • Weight Loss

  • Can improve mental and physical health

Mock-tails are a great way to support friends participating in Sober October

Mock-tails are a great way to support friends participating in Sober October

How can I support friends and family who are participating in Sober October?

  • Consider joining them

  • Be there for them and encourage them

  • Don’t “sober shame” or question their reasons, just support them.

  • Remember mock-tails! Any cocktail you make can be adjusted to be booze free. Have fun with flavored syrups, sugar rims, salt rims, herbs and more!

Ready to give it a try?

Changing habits are easiest when you can replace the old habit with a new habit. If you enjoy a glass of wine in the evening or always have a nightcap, try a hot tea instead. Headed to a friend’s house or need a beer for that football game? Acme Liquor Store carries a great selection of non-alcoholic beers, wines, Proseccos, bubbly rosés, and CBD sodas.

Tips for a Successful Sober October:

  • Set a goal and create a little motivation for yourself. Mini goals combined with mini rewards are good way to go. Start with a week-long goal and come up with a fun reward for yourself each week.

  • Plan ahead for social events, bring your favorite CBD soda, tea, or NA beer.

  • If you slip up, that doesn’t have to be the end of the challenge, just start again where you left off.

  • Health experts suggest paying attention to how you feel as you cut back and to reach out to your medical professionals with any questions.

Bourbon vs. Whiskey

Sometimes the world doesn’t flow quite as easily as bourbon…

bourbon.whiskey.png

Bummer, we know, but since we are on the topic—

What makes a bourbon a bourbon, anyway?

Are all bourbons whiskey?

(Get ready to put your thinking caps on.)

Whiskey is a rectangle.

Bourbon is a square.

All squares are rectangles, but not all rectangles are squares.

All bourbons are whiskey, but not all whiskeys are bourbons.

For bourbon to be bourbon…

1. The mash must be at least 51% corn. The rest is malted barley, rye, or wheat.

2. It must be distilled out at less than 160 proof.

3. It must go into the barrels at less than 125 proof.

4. Only new, charred, oak barrels may be used.

5. There are no additives.

So, it’s a type of whiskey, much the way that champagne is a type of wine.

Above all else, guess what pairs best with bourbon?

FALL! That's what!

With cooler evenings and crisp mornings, we are beginning to feel the changing of the season in Crested Butte. It’s almost time to indulge in bourbon’s warm, loving embrace! Come see us!

Best Mexican Beers? You tell us!

We did a little in house taste test of three of the most popular Mexican Beers and we’d love to know what you think?!

Did you know that most years Mexican beer comprises more than two-thirds of American imports? Whoa right?!

We recommend testing in this order, first without lime and then with lime.

  1. Tecate

  2. Pacifico Original

  3. Modelo Especial

If you really want to find out what your taste buds think, grab a friend and do a blind taste test, then stop by and grab more of your fav while you can! Don’t forget to grab some lime, we have these new squeeze limes in, they’re pretty rad!

26 Years of Soccer!

Earlier this month, the 26th Annual Crested Butte Adult Soccer Tournament went down, and it was spectacular! 12 teams converged on CB’s field, with Rice, Beans, and Crackers taking home the winner’s trophy. Acme was once again a title sponsor, with Manager Lauren Alkire as a top referee.

Here are some of her notes from the weekend:

Rain sprinkles, teams begin to arrive. Current college, youth and high school coaches; past and present college and high school players. They recognize us referees from the youth/collegiate world; players recognize one another from the same venues. The adult soccer community of Colorado comes together once again for an amazing weekend in CB. Foul language permissible...within reason. Adult beverages encouraged.

coloradosoccerclub.jpg

First game, 8:00 am kickoff, gloriously cool. Opposing central midfielders, each with magical mullets. With every dip, duck, dive as they challenge one another their mullets are bouncing in unison. Amazing.

Later in the day, a goal is scored from a kickoff. Wow.

Great play and good fun all day. Referee candy (Ibuprofen) at 10:30 am and again at 2:30 pm. Snacks, water and Gatorade throughout the day. Hop on the bike at the school field to ride to the Tommy V bathrooms. Remember to apply sunscreen!

referees.jpg

First games of day 2 are semi-finals. Crested Butte Kickers are in one and XForce FC with many Gunnison players in the other. Both are great games, probably the best games of the weekend. XForce FC's game goes to overtime and then KFTM (kicks from the mark, aka penalty kicks). Consolation games continue the day.

Final Game: Colorado Soccer Club vs Rice, Beans, and Crackers. By the first five minutes of the game, Rice, Beans, and Crackers are up 4 - 0. Ouch. It starts to rain again. Glorious rain! Rumble, boom. Noooo!!! Check the weather app. We're good, keep playing. Whew!

Final whistle for the weekend. Trophy presentation. Pictures. Adult beverages.

Sleep. Glorious sleep.

Thank you to all the sponsors, players, refs, volunteers, and WESA (West Elk Soccer Association) for making it happen!

Proceeds benefit WESA and youth programs in the valley.

Preparing for Passover (and What Makes Kosher Wine Special)

As we come upon the 27th of this month, we see Passover approaching. For those who celebrate, this holiday means many things, including traditional dinners. And what do you have at these dinners?

Kosher wine.

20210310_105648 (1).jpg

There are many Kosher options at Acme Liquor Store, including Manischewitz and Recanati.

If you’ve ever heard of Kosher wine, you might be wondering…what makes is Kosher? Is it different than non-Kosher wine?

And here’s the truth: It tastes exactly the same.

There is nothing different about the flavors or how it tastes. Only how it is made. That is, strict rules to purity, ingredients, who can make it, and contact of all ingredients.

Different holidays also have different rules. For example, a wine that is Kosher for Passover cannot come in contact with grain, bread, or anything with leavened dough.

Do you have a favorite Kosher wine? Come into Acme Liquor Store today to see our options and prepare for your Passover Seder.

Female Fermenters & Women Winemakers - Celebrating Women’s History Month in the Colorado Alcohol Industry

Every year, we are lucky to see more and more women in the alcohol industry, and we couldn't love it more. In honor of Women's History Month, we're highlighting 3 local and women-owned brands. We highly suggest checking out their stories below and grabbing samples of their hard work right here at Acme Liquor Store in Crested Butte!

Montanya Distillers

In Crested Butte we have the amazing Montanya Distillers. They're a frequent flyer in the blog and in our store because not only do they have great products, but they are a pleasure to work with.

Karen Hoskin, the founder of Montanya, learned early in life that high quality alcohol matters. Not only did she fall in love with aged Indian dark rum while traveling at the age of 21, but living with Celiac she knew she couldn't have beer when in the mood for an alcoholic beverage.

Almost 20 years later, that love developed into what we know as Montanya Distillers and the delicious high mountain rum (and amazing cocktails) we know today!

You can learn more about Karen and Montanya's commitment to diversity and gender diversity on their website: https://www.montanyarum.com/staff

Buckel Family Wine

We were lucky enough to chat with Shamai Buckel of Buckel Family Wine and she had some advice for women looking to enter the alcohol industry. Buckel Family Wine is a family-owned business located in Gunnison Valley. Wine lovers near and far can enjoy their makes by ordering from their website ,joining their Wine Club or stop in and ask us about our favs. They even do virtual tastings!

Let's chat with Shamai:

Acme Liquor Store: Can you tell us a little about how you got into winemaking?

Shamai Buckel: An interest in creating and a love for local products. Winemaking is a beautiful melding of science and art, fermenting grapes to wine all the wine touching, smelling, and tasting. It's the process that I love.

Acme Liquor Store: What is your role in the company?

Shamai Buckel: I am a co-founder of Buckel Family Wine. In a small company we wear many hats and are continually innovating to build our brand.

Acme Liquor Store: Any advice or insights for other women who are looking to get into the industry?

Shamai Buckel: Determine your strengths and find a good team of people to work with.

Snowcapped Cider

Our third and final highlight: This family-owned cidery out of Cederedge, Colordo is lead by the wife and husband team of Kari and Ty Williams. Kari, the family's matriarch, leads the industry in her creativity of marketing, sales, and distribution.

Snowcapped offers creative ciders beyond the traditional apple. You can find a variety of flavors and fruits, including peaches and cherries, plus innovative options like Plum Lemongrass and Jala-PEAR-no. You can even pick up a Lavender Lemonade Spritzer!

Snowcapped’s high-quality cider-specific fruit is grown in Colorado following authentic orchard-based English and French styles, thus eliminating the need for added artificial sugars to achieve a clean, fresh taste - does it get any better than that?!

Check out all the flavors on their website and come into Acme Liquor Store to grab what piques your interest!

Nicole Chanrion Domaine de la Voute des Crozes Cote de Brouilly 2018

Ripe red berries are laced with hints of schist from the soil, expanding through a soft finish of well-integrated tannins. Clean and buoyant, it has the guts to stand up to most foods.

Wine Spectator says: “Raspberry and tart cherry flavors are flanked by smoke, herb and rose petal notes in this supple red, accented by elements of spice. Offers plush tannins on the licorice-tinged finish. Drink now through 2024.”

Yalumba Samuel's Garden Eden Valley Viognier

Pure aromas are reminiscent of fresh apricots, lifted ginger, saffron and fresh white flowers. The palate is long, rich and luscious, with intense and expressive stone fruit flavors and hints of orange peel, finishing with an alluring freshness. This wine will continue to grow and develop in the bottle, firstly showing enhanced apricots and spice, then after a couple of years developing honey flavors and toast complexity.

A wonderful food wine that complements spiced dishes. Try it with Moroccan tajine and spiced cous cous or pork dumplings with ginger and chilli oil dipping sauce.

Decanter says: “Delicate apricot and acacia aromas, creamy texture with peach, quince and delicate ginger spice towards the end. Notes of melon and juniper carry through on the long finish, with a pleasant mineral salinity.”

Mid Week Boozy Hot Chocolate, because 2020

Mid week boozy hot chocolate? Yup, 2020 isn’t going anywhere anytime soon (yes we just referred to 2020 as a mood, it’s a thing now). In case you haven’t looked out your window today there is just a little snow on the ground. . . and it’s the second snow day for the district in 30 some odd years. So get you some of this boozy hot coco and go back to bed or break out your nordic skis and fat bikes!

Photo: Gunnison Regional 911

Photo: Gunnison Regional 911

  • 2 ounces semisweet chocolate, finely chopped (or hot coco mix, we like Camp 4’s!)

  • 6 ounces milk, heated

  • 1 1/2 ounce spirit of choice (we suggest Telluride Distributing’s Chairlift Warmer Peppermint Schnapps, but you do you!)

  • Garnish: mini marshmallows or giant ones, we won’t judge

Put the chopped chocolate into your fav mug. Pour the hot milk into the mug and let stand for 2 minutes, then stir with a spoon until smooth. Pour in the spirit of your choice and stir to combine. Garnish with mini marshmallows. Curl up by your fire and enjoy the view!
